Call for Papers: Artificial intelligence and Internet Studies

2025-12-02

The journal Artificial Intelligence and Internet Studies (AIIS) is pleased to announce a call for papers for its upcoming February 2026 issue. This special issue seeks to explore the complex interplay between artificial intelligence systems and the socio-technical fabrics of the internet. We welcome contributions that critically investigate how AI shapes—and is shaped by—social practices, cultural norms, political structures, and ethical frameworks in digital environments.

We encourage submissions addressing the following interdisciplinary themes:

  • AI Ethics & Governance: Algorithmic fairness, transparency, accountability, and regulatory frameworks for AI systems.

  • AI & Digital Culture: The impact of generative AI, recommendation systems, and content moderation on creativity, identity, and online communities.

  • Labor & Automation: The transformation of work, gig economy dynamics, and human-AI collaboration in digital platforms.

  • Surveillance & Privacy: Datafication, predictive analytics, and the political economy of AI-driven surveillance.

  • AI in Public Discourse: The role of AI in misinformation, political communication, and the formation of public opinion.

  • Human-AI Interaction: Social robotics, conversational agents, and the phenomenological experience of interacting with AI.

  • Infrastructure & Platform Studies: The material politics of AI, including data centers, energy consumption, and global supply chains.

  • Methodological Innovations: Critical and interdisciplinary approaches to studying AI (e.g., digital ethnography, algorithm auditing, speculative design).

Submission Guidelines:

  • We welcome original research articles, critical reviews, theoretical interventions, and methodologically reflective papers.

  • All submissions will undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process.

  • Manuscripts must be prepared according to the journal's style guide.

  • Submissions must be made through our online manuscript system.

Key Dates:

  • Manuscript Submission Deadline: 31 January 2026

  • Peer Review Period: January – February 2026

  • Final Decision & Publication: February 2026

Contribute to shaping a critical and constructive research agenda for understanding AI's role in our collective digital future.
